Renowned Ghanaian filmmaker and producer Socrate Safo has expressed his dismay over the public insults directed at former President John Agyekum Kufuor following his endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the upcoming December 7 elections.

In an interview with Okay FM, Safo expressed his hurt and criticized the actions of those who insulted Kufuor, stating that such behaviour is unacceptable, especially in Ghana, where respect for elders is a core value.

“I felt so bad. Are we sinking so low as a country? We have a culture. We are supposed to respect our elders. So for an adult to go and sit in public and insult an old man is sad. Because of what? For a decision we are going to take as a country?” he remarked.

Socrate Safo urged the public to express their political preferences through voting rather than resorting to disrespectful behavior.

“You are not being forced. No one is going to hold you at gunpoint or knifepoint. He has given his opinion. If you don't like it, vote for who you want. So this shouldn't be a reason to insult your elders. It is not good,” he said.

Safo's comments join those of other personalities who have condemned the insults directed at the former president.

On November 18, 2024, NDC communicator Dela Edem was forced to apologise after he made unsavoury comments directed at the former president.

During an appearance on Accra-based TV XYZ, Edem used unsavoury language, suggesting that Kufuor's current health issues were a result of his actions as president.

The comments have been widely condemned by various Ghanaian personalities and the NDC itself, which has distanced itself from Edem's remarks.

Despite issuing an apology, Edem continues to face backlash for his statements.
