Ghanaian rapper and entrepreneur Desmond Blackmore, also known as D-Black, has expressed dismay over the recent arrests of some protesters in Accra.

On Sunday, September 22, 2024, some Democracy Hub protestors, including socialite Ama Governor and model Glenn Samm, were arrested on the second day of a three-day protest at the 37 Military Roundabout in Accra.

Speaking to GhanaWeb TV’s Elsie Lamar on Talkertainment, D-Black questioned the rationale behind the arrests by the police and argued that everyone is entitled to free speech.

“We're in a country where freedom of speech, especially by the youth, should be free for everyone. I asked if the police had put out a statement because I really don't know the reason behind them being arrested. I've looked everywhere. I look on social media and I don't see any particular reason why the police have arrested youth for demonstrating,” he said.

D-Black stressed that the police should protect citizens rather than intimidate them.

“There are people who are protesting, who are not protesting because of any party affiliations. Politics will always mar some of these things. You have 100 good nuts and then you have, like, 20 bad. That will take it to the extreme. But I feel like the police are supposed to protect us, not intimidate and distress us,” he said.

He recalled his participation in a previous protest at the same location, stating that he had not experienced such a response from the police.

“Last year I showed up at one of the protests at 37. It was a Sunday and there were thousands of people. This didn't happen. So I'm really surprised,” he said.

"I really pray and hope the right thing is done at this point," he added.

D-Black concluded by distancing himself from politics, describing it as a "dirty game" he has no interest in joining.

Meanwhile, an Accra Circuit Court has remanded the protestors.

They have been slapped face five charges including conspiracy to commit a crime, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct, breach of public peace, and assault on public officers.
