Asky is a versatile lyricist who is about to prove that he can move music lovers and club goers is poised for mainstream success. The multitalented hiplife rapper, Asky spent his high-school years recording with a couple of groups which did not land them major deals but that did not also deter him from giving up.
He was able to take his rapping skills to South Africa after he secured a scholarship where he rubbed shoulders with some of the top MCs in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban as well as Pretoria.
Asky is entering the game as a virtual unknown artiste but will be heralded as a known musician in a few days to come.
Keeping the ball rolling, Asky is set to drop his sophomore effort, “Tow Mpa”, this month. While he promises his fans what to expect, Asky says he’s digging deeper on this album, getting personal, discussing real-life situations and one that cuts across all ages.
The hit-maker is coming out with a familiar formula that will be profitable over and over again with his radio-friendly tracks that targets adolescent and grown ups.
ASKY has starting getting some respect as a grown-up artist since Ghana Music.com commenced with the building of his image.
With an interview he granted us when he came out of his base as an army officer, I bet he can scan a size amount of sales with the latest album.
Ghana Music.com: So what’s the name of the new artiste in town?
ASKY: A-S-K-Y is the latest sensation on the hiplife scene right now here in Ghana. The lyricist doubles as a soldier in the British Army and as a DJ at Rainbow Radio in UK. The flex, the flair and tight lyrics are my hallmark.
Ghana Music.com: So how has the music journey been for you?
ASKY: Cannot say the journey has been a smooth-sail but its all about strategy coupled with a lot of planning. I must admit that it has been a rough terrain considering how producers keep on tossing artistes but it’s all good; I’ve been listening and watching a great deal just to be able to deliver to all music lovers what they yearn for. The time is now, because I believe I’ve been trained enough on the streets to do justice to all the noise.
Ghana Music.com: Do you think you would be accepted in the choked industry?
ASKY: Serious rap business for over nine years is no joke and I tell you Ghanaians will just love the flavour. Ha-ha-ha, I don’t think the industry is choked at all. The system just needs a little bit of variety. That variety is all I am offering to Ghanaians this festive season.
Ghana Music.com: What kind of songs are you doing?
ASKY: The “Tow Mpa” album can boast of danceable tunes like the title track itself ‘Tow Mpa’, ‘Odo Nkwan’, ‘Home and Away’, ‘Hard Core’, ‘Romeo & Juliet’ and a host of other great tunes. The album is tailored to fit all sorts of life stages be it the youth, elderly and even the young folks.
Ghana Music.com: Could you define the album and why I should go the music shops and buy a copy?
ASKY: You’ve got to grab a copy of the album because you can’t let the fun and excitement it offers pass you by. Like I said, this is the perfect `gift from Clean Blood Entertainment to all Ghanaians as well as the song to usher into Ghana all visitors for the African Cup of Nations.
Ghana Music.com: How many tracks you got on the album?
ASKY: The album comprises of 12 pulse-stopping songs on the CD’s and 8 on the cassette tapes.
Ghana Music.com: Which artistes blessed the album for you guys?
ASKY: Inspiration, first and foremost is from the man upstairs (Otwediampong, Kantamanto, Okokoroko Nyankopong) whose guidance and protection has brought me this far. I thank you, father. But the likes of Reggie (Hiplife Grandpa and Lord Kenya has been of immense inspiration to me. There’s no way anybody can down-play their efforts and contribution but we’re just here to fulfill the part of their dreams.
Ghana Music.com: After the album is released, what next for you?
ASKY: I won’t rest on my oars at all since there will be so much to offer to this industry and the nation as well after this maiden album. Though this industry offers a lot of opportunities, we seem not to have the attention of the international markets. I have plans of establishing a record company purposely to nurture new talents and catapult them onto the international stage. I believe its time for Africans to give a face-lift to African music wherever they can be found.
Ghana Music.com: What’s the promotion strategy for U?
ASKY: We gonna hit almost all the TV screens massively early next year. The posters will be everywhere in this country just the night of TV release.
The CD’s will be released onto the market after the two weeks. Sales will be monitored and the cassette tapes will be released if possible. I will be here in Ghana during X’mas holidays for the trips and I believe Ghana Music.com will be right with us during our trips. We have plans of shaking up the VRA club house at Aboadze in the Western region on Boxing Day and other similar places after the said event.
