NEWS-ONE, last Saturday, had the privilege of hosting Asamoah Gyan, the Ghanaian soccer star who plays as a striker for England’s Premier League club Sunderland.
Asamoah Gyan aka Baby Jet visited NEWS-ONE in the company of his big brother, Baffour Gyan and hiplife sensation Castro Da Destroyer of ‘Back On And On’ fame.
Baby Jet touched on a couple of interesting issues including his secret to success, his new charity foundation, his clothing line, his girl lovers and the fact that he is the official face of the newly-published GUBA Magazine.
Baby arrived in a brand new Hummer H2, of which he had customized the registration number plate ‘B-Jet 33-11’ and was wearing a customized T-Shirt which also had his initials, BJ. NEWS-ONE first asked if the shirt was from his new clothing line.
BJ Fashion Line “Oh yeah…it is something I would be starting very soon but I would want to keep the details away from the public for now. Having my clothing line is something I admire and would soon start. This shirt is just one of them.”
GUBA Magazine “I feel very proud to be on the face of this magazine. I’m an African and as you can see, I am dressed in kente. Something not many people have seen me dressed in before. This is a magazine that has being endorsed by Ghana’s High Commission in the UK and I feel very good to be part of it. It talks about Ghanaians who are achieving something for themselves in the UK and I am proud to be part of it.”
What Is The Magic? “Well I attribute it to God. I just do my best and leave the rest to him. My big brother here has been very helpful and he is my secret to success. He advises me and tells me how to go about things, from football to everything. I owe him a lot and I must say that here.”
The Asamoah Gyan Dance “That one too is just great and we would be releasing a new one soon. There are more interesting things we want to do for Ghanaians because we love them a lot. As to how I learnt that dance, I can’t tell but my boss Castro is here and he may best explain. I just do my best to entertain people, especially when I score, I do the dance and everyone seems to like it. I feel happy because we plan to do it on the field and all of a sudden people love it.
People should just watch out for something new. Most of my foreign friends (players) love the dance. Anytime we are in the dressing room, I teach them because they are all trying to learn it.”
Most Entertaining Person In Ghana “Yeah, it is true I was given that award recently and I thank Ghanaians for that. I just do my best as I said. When I see the crowd and they want me to entertain them, I just do it without feeling shy or feeling big. I am me and I want them to see me just as I am. Castro and I rehearse a lot and I try to do my best for the fans.”
Asamoah Gyan Foundation “My brother and I would be coming up with the Asamoah Gyan Foundation this December. It would be a charity foundation and our priority would be to promote female education. We would be doing other things to help society but for now, our aim is to promote the girl child as far as education is concerned. I have the passion to give back to society and that is what pushes me to do this.”
How Your Lover Handles Your Fame “She takes it cool because she understands that I am both a footballer and an entertainer….yeah she takes it cool and does not complain at all….oh I have several girlfriends, Barbara, Monica, Cynthia, Adjoa and all the female names I mentioned in Castro’s song.”
GUBA is a quarterly print magazine resulting from the first Ghana United Kingdom Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards held last year October, and is the only magazine in the UK endorsed by the Ghana High Commission.
The magazine is a business and entertainment lifestyle magazine designed to inspire young professionals, entrepreneurs and businesses within the Ghanaian community, through highlighting and celebrating Ghanaians in the UK, their achievements and friends of Ghana all over the world.
The magazine is being distributed in Ghana, UK and US. In Ghana, readers can get a copy at the Silverbird Lifestyle store and every newspaper stand. On Saturday, the magazine was launched in Accra at the Silverbird Cinema, where Asamoah Gyan signed autographs.
