Nigeria’s Burna Boy has been crowned Artiste of the Year at the 2019 SoundCity MVP Awards Festival.
He beat competition from Davido, Sarkodie, Yemi Alade, A.K.A, Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Diamod Platnumz, Nasty C and Olamide.
The event which was held at Eko Hotel Convention Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos on Saturday, also saw the musician walk home with Best Male MVP, Song of the Year and Listener’s Choice awards courtesy his ‘Ye’ song.
Phantom who produced the ‘Ye’ song also beat Killertunes, Julz, Sars, Nahreel, Northboi, DJ Tira, Speroachbeatz, Fresh VDM and Kel P to win Producer of the Year.
Burna Boy’s victory comes barely days after he incurred the wrath of Nigerians. Some citizens criticized him for registering his displeasure over organisers of the Coachella Music Festival’s decision to write his name “so small” on the official poster for the event. They asserted that Burna Boy was becoming arrogant.
The artiste in response described Nigeria as a “home to the largest number of backward unprogressive fools” adding that he “will still fight for them because they are not mentally advanced enough to fight for themselves.”
This certainly did not go well with a section of the populace and they rebutted.
