The late Nollywood actress, singer, and activist Onyeka Onwenu detailed how she should be buried should she exit this world in an opinion piece she published on Premium Times in 2021.
The singer, famous for her love ballads and songs about women's rights, was said to have died on the night of Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos after slumping at the birthday party of accomplished Nigerian pharmacist Stella Okoli.
The 'Elegant Stallion,' as she was called, died at the age of 72.
In her opinion piece from 2021, she directed that her loved ones should mourn less and channel their energies into celebrating her life with prayers and light-hearted moments.
"Mourn, yes, but not excessively. Celebrate me with prayers, lunch, or dinner afterwards. Share some jokes about me and laugh. Make merriment and then go about your business. If my friends want to celebrate me, they should do so while I am alive so that I can enjoy it with them, not when I am gone and have no idea about this. That is me, Onyeka Onwenu," the late singer earlier wrote.
She spoke against any attempt to organize a lavish funeral ceremony for her and stressed her dislike for excessive display of wealth at all occasions, especially when many people are going through economic hardship.
"I am very uncomfortable with the lavish display of wealth on any occasion, especially in a time of hardship and lack for most others," she remarked.
