Candidate Delivers in Hospital

A 19-year-old female student last Tuesday stunned her friends when she delivered a baby at the Sunyani Government Hospital where she had been taken for treatment of abdominal pains.

Unknown to her friends, Miss Janet Mensah, a candidate in the on-going Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE), was pregnant but managed to hide her condition through the wearing of tight clothing.

The baby, however, died soon after birth apparently from constant squeezing of clothing on it.

Janet caused a stir when after delivery, the following day she asked permission to go and write her examination.

The hospital authorities refused to give the name of the school but said she is a day student in one of the second cycle institutions in Sunyani.

The authorities told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani that Janet in the company of her friends reported at the out patient department (OPD) and complained of stomach pains.

Before she could be attended to, Janet went into labour and delivered at the OPD before she could be taken to the maternity ward.

Janet was later admitted for observation but on Wednesday, she asked to be allowed to go and write a paper in the SSSCE and the nurses obliged.

She reported back soon after she had finished her paper and the nurses who thought she was fit, discharged her on Friday.
