When Daddy Lumba born Charles Kojo Fosu bombed into “Entertainment Review” on Peace FM last Saturday, he was very emotional at the manner in which he delivered his answers to every question Kwasi Aboagye asked.
This was to the surprise of many Ghanaians both home and abroad who listened to the program.
His readiness to answer every question and smooth delivery filled the thirty five minutes interview with so much information about him as Daddy Lumba for the past 21years and what the new DL image is all about. Everybody who listened to the chit chat should by now understand why certain things happen, how quiet and reserved people like DL feel about the way things are, in the music industry, which they usually don’t comment about.
The interview delved into his music life than the usual biographic way. He disclosed that the next thing to come aside his pending album” Agenda” will be a DL branded condom from the DL range of products. He was at a point asked to make his opinion very clear and precise about his stand on some serious issues going on in the industry.
His response to this complemented what Carlos Sekyi, Faisal Helwani, the late Kojo Acquaye, Rex Omar, Gedu Blay Ambuley, Mac Tontoh, Nana Kwame Ampadu, Kojo Antwi and other influential musicians have always been saying. He almost busted into tears with his voice which sounded very similar to that of his apprentice Ofori Amponsah who latter changed his name to all All4Real. He disagreed with the perception that we don’t have a music industry in Ghana.
“We have an industry but we don’t have devoted committed and competent people to run the affairs of MUSIGA, COSGA and other bodies set to seek the welfare of musician in the country. We can see clearly that we have mistakenly putting some people at certain positions and they do not have the slightest idea about how to run their office efficiently”. He referred to Betty Mode and commended her so much for going round other to regions to fight and arrest pirates.
DL was sad, nobody is doing that now to control piracy and protect creative works. When the host prompted him that there are a few publicized anti-piracy campaigns by the present copyright administration, DL answered back with a question. “How many pirates have they arrested? And how many of them have they prosecuted? We need to jail someone and set him or her as escape goats.
Arresting one or two people does not necessarily mean you are controlling piracy. Do you know how many pirates there are in Accra alone? I … I … don’t even know what to say again because if they know where some of us sleep or the things we go through before we are able to write one song may be they would have protected our rights “ He spoke so emotionally.
Daddy made it clear to all Ghanaians that he is presently, the highest paid musician in Ghana as far as music royalty is concern.
When he was asked how much he is paid he said “Image I am the highest paid and I’m sure Carlos and everybody will attest to that. I stop going for my royalties for some past four years and when I went there, they gave me 16million Cedis, which means I take 4million Cedis a year. It’s a disgrace to even say this on air but that is the truth.
He stated categorically that all his colleagues and him really appreciate the work of the government but also beg of them to equally give attention to music and entertainment in general like any other sector of national development and accord them support due them.
