Dear GhanaWeb: My girlfriend acts strangely at midnight, I want to break up but she is threatening me

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’ve been dating this lady for almost a year now.

She has been so kind to me, pretty, yet humble, and I admire her so much.

I once told her that I would never let her go, no matter what.

One day, she called and asked if she could come spend the night with me. I agreed, but I noticed something strange during her visits.

On four different occasions, she came to spend the night at my place. Each time, around 1:00 to 2:00 a.m., I’d wake up to a noise.

She would walk up and down the room as if she were marching, and talking to herself.

She seemed completely unaware of my presence.

When I tried to stop or talk to her, she became strong and resistant, pushing me away.

She would continue this behaviour for about an hour before falling asleep on the floor.

The first time this happened, I was scared. I tried to calm her down throughout the night. By then, we had been dating for about six months, and this was her first sleepover, so I didn’t want to jump to conclusions.

In the morning, she explained that she was having a dream and that this often happened to her. She told me that next time, I shouldn’t worry or try to touch her.

The second time, it happened again. I tried to stay calm but couldn’t. I sat up, watching her, and was relieved when she eventually fell asleep. I helped her to bed when it was over.

The next morning, she warned me not to try to take her to bed if it happened again, and to leave her wherever she fell asleep.

It happened again for the third and fourth times, the most recent just this past weekend. I spoke to a friend about it, a grown man, and he didn’t say much except to advise me to leave her and find someone else.

I love her so much, and breaking up with her would hurt me deeply, but now I feel like I have no choice.

I told her I wanted to break up, but she became furious. She started threatening me, saying that I would die if I end the relationship.

She reminded me that I promised to love her and always be there for her, and that I shouldn’t break that promise.

Now, I’m scared and unsure of what to do. How can I safely end this relationship and handle her threats?
