Dear GhanaWeb: Where is it stated that a man must provide for his stepdaughter after divorce?

Dear GhanaWeb,

Before my estranged wife and I got married, she had a child from a previous relationship.

Not once did I single my stepdaughter out of the family because she wasn’t my biological child. I loved and treated her as my own.

Her mother and I had a happy home but decided to end the marriage due to a minor misunderstanding. I begged my wife to stay, but she insisted on leaving. I decided to respect her decision and signed the divorce papers.

I hadn’t heard from my ex-wife for a year after the divorce, but she decided to pay me a surprise visit one day.

We talked, and her reason for the visit was to ask me to pay child support for her daughter. I told her I couldn’t do that because I no longer regarded her as part of my family.

When I shared this with my friends, they thought my response was harsh.

I would like to know if I am legally obligated to continue supporting my stepdaughter after the divorce.
