‘Defe Defe’ controversy: Anyone can win in court with a good lawyer – DJ Slim opposes out-of-court settlement

Regarding the ongoing Defe Defe controversy, DJ Slim has asserted that any of the parties involved could emerge victorious in court if they have a good lawyer.

He was reacting to Kwame Mickey accusing Team Eternity Ghana of copyright infringement concerning his and their song, both titled Defe Defe, remarking: “This case is dicey.”

He spoke to Kwame Okyere Junior (KOJ) on Accra 100.5 FM’s Entertainment Capital, Saturday, June 22, 2024.

The Kumasi-based DJ and radio presenter opined Kwame Mickey’s “case and approach are very right because you can clearly hear the inspiration for that part of the song was from Halleluya Voices’” but asserted also, “If Team Eternity and Kwame Mickey get good lawyers on their side, the judgment could favor any of them.”

DJ Slim acknowledged Kwame Mickey as the executive producer, Osuani Afrifa as the author, Halleluya Voices as the performer, and Daniel Bassey as the record producer, opining: “All these people have to be compensated if it is established that Team Eternity took their line from theirs.”

Ruling out sampling in this instance, he noted interpolation was the best way to describe what had happened, and an important question was: “Did Team Eternity sing it just as Halleluya Voices had?”

DJ Slim opposed an out-of-court settlement for the Defe Defe controversy, stating: “Personally, I’d like us to test our laws because, most of the time, Ghanaians like to settle such issues out of court too much.”

“Let’s go to court,” he emphasized, “get some documentation that will be precedence for later so that we will all understand the intricate parts of copyright issues with Kwame Mickey vs Team Eternity as a reference.”

Noting the proverb, 'if you are made of cotton, do not go near fire', he said he would advise Team Eternity to handle this case sensitively, especially since their previous releases unequivocally demonstrate they are fond of covers, sampling, and interpolations.

Also, DJ Slim observed the church and Gospel industry would have to make a lot of copyright settlements if they were investigated, advocating Team Eternity Ghana should not be the only one looked into.
