Hopeson Adorye, the husband of gospel musician Empress Gifty, has been arrested by the police.
Mr. Adorye, who is a leading member of the Movement for Change, is said to have been arrested on May 22, 2024.
The arrest comes after the former NPP member said, during an interview on Accra FM on May 10, 2024, that he was part of a plan to scare voters in NDC's stronghold during the December 2016 elections, by detonating dynamite in parts of the Volta region.
This move, he said, was to ensure that the NPP won the elections.
"Prior to the elections, we blasted dynamite in parts of the Volta Region, and that scared a number of people. When I finished casting my ballot in Tema, I drove to the Volta Region, and when I asked for the number of people who had voted and the expected number of voters, it turned out people did not come out to vote," he is quoted to have said.
According to myjoyonline.com, Mr Adorye who was arrested on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, is currently assisting police with investigations.
M4C members storm police station over Hopeson Adorye’s arrest
Some supporters of Alan Kyerematen's Movement for Change (M4C) stormed the Ministries Police Station on May 22, 2024, to demand the release of Hopeson Adorye, a key member of the movement.
The protest was ignited by what the supporters allege to be a politically motivated arrest.
One of the supporters captured on camera, vehemently defending Adorye, questioned the legality of his detention and hinted at political interference.
"Are we still in military rule or civilian rule? What is democracy about? We are here today; we are going to sleep with Hopeson Adorye here.
“If they are detaining Hopeson, then they have to detain every supporter of Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen,” she said.
She claimed that the government is attempting to silence Adorye to prevent further revelations that could damage the party's reputation.
“Hopeson has been detained because he supports Alan Kyerematen and is revealing the NPP's dirty deals that were used to gain power; we all know who is behind these instructions from above,” she added.
Buaben Asamoa reveals Hopeson Adorye's 'crime,' claims political witchhunt
Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a former Member of Parliament for Adentan has accused the government of engaging in political witchhunt with the May 22 arrest of Hopeson Adorye.
Buaben Asamoa in an interview on Joy FM confirmed the arrest adding that Adorye was being detained at the Ministries Police Station over charges of publishing false information.
"Hopeson Adorye is not about to run away from Ghana or from his home because the police intends to charge him with the publication of false information.
"So, to go to the extent of keeping him all day in the police station and bringing him over to the Ministries to detain him, you point fingers backward at yourself that there is something political at play and it's not fair," he said.
"This is obviously politically motivated, there is no doubt about that," he emphasized.
