Driver slaps an ex-lover into coma

Accra Oct. 17, GNA- Audience at the Osu District Magistrate Court were on Friday stunned by a revelation that an accused physically assaulted his ex-girl friend until she collapsed.

Kwesi Badu, a driver sentenced on his own plea for assault, told the court that he slapped his former girl friend Dora Awatey and collapsed. He was asked to pay a two million cedis fine in addition to five million cedis compensation to Dora or in default serve 18 months imprisonment by the Court presided over by Mr George Nana Donkor. A medical report on Dora indicated she had pre-mature menstruation as a result of the assault.

In another development, Dora who was hospitalised for sometime was also charged with causing unlawful damage to the windscreen of Badu's taxi. She was granted one million cedis bail after pleading not guilty to re-appear on November 3.

Police Inspector Abudulai Musah told the Court that Dora, a tea seller, lived with Badu at Nima, in Accra and on October 8, this year, Badu who maintained that Dora was his girlfriend, visited her and met another man in her room.

Prosecution said Badu became annoyed and pounced on Dora, assaulted her until she collapsed. She was rushed to a near-by clinic where she regained consciousness and later referred to the Adabraka Polyclinic for further treatment.

Police Inspector Musah, said on the day of the incident, Badu attempted to knockdown Dora with his taxi but she jumped and landed into a gutter. Dora became annoyed, picked a stone and threw it at Badu who was then driving, but the stone missed and hit the windscreen, the prosecution said.
