Kumasi, May 30, GNA - A 21-year-old driver who claimed to have acquired a driving license at age eight has been remanded by a Kumasi Circuit Court for driving without a license.
Kwasi Botchway has been charged with various traffic offences including parking and picking passengers at unauthorized places as well as driving without a license.
He pleaded guilty with explanation and insisted that he acquired his driving license in 1994 when he was eight years old but he had misplaced it and had reported it to the police. The court remanded the accused to enable it to establish the veracity of his claims with the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
He will be brought back on May 31.
At the same court eight drivers were fined 20 million cedis by a Kumasi circuit court over traffic offences. Their charges included stopping and picking of passengers at wrong places, causing road obstruction and driving without carrying their licenses.
They pleaded guilty to the charges and were fined between two million and three million cedis and in default they will each serve between 18 and 24 months imprisonment in hard labour.
The prosecution told the court presided over by Mr Ernest Yao Obimpeh that on May 23, a police team arrested the drivers at Patasi police depot, Abrepo Junction, Sofoline roundabout and Anloga Junction. The drivers are Yaw Ansah, Steven Agarrio, Yeboah, Kofi Amponsah, Kwame Anthony, Kwaku Gyamfi, Atta Panyin and Ibrahim Issaka. 30 May 07
