Elmina celebrates Bakatue

Bakatue means "opening up of the Benya Lagoon into the sea". It symbolizes the beginning of a fishing season, which is the main livelihood of the people of Elmina.

It is celebrated annually on the first Tuesday in July and originated centuries ago and this year was no different. The 2016 Edna Bakatue was celebrated on Tuesday at Elmina.

There was a solemn "net casting" ceremony which symbolizes the beginning of a new fishing season and the catch was offered to the deities of the traditional area

The splendid ceremonies included a durbar of chiefs, a colorful regatta of canoes on the Benya Lagoon and processions.

This year’s festival was sponsored by Ashfoam.
