Seven exponents of authentic Ghanaian Highlife music were on the 47th Anniversary of Ghana's Independence on Saturday recognised and rewarded.
King Onyina; Agya Koo Nimo; Dr K Gyasi; Jerry Hanson, Alhaji Fuseini Pia, Togbe Daniel Ahegbebu and Efua Dorkenoo were honoured under the Living Legend series instituted by the National Theatre of Ghana and Musicians Association of Ghana (MUSIGA).
Each received an icon of a horn blower.
King Onyina, 75, led the Onyina Guitar Band in the 1940s to the 70s and played a distinctive Highlife that excited the sympathetic autonomic nervous system. He is reputed to have written and played more 300 songs. Agya Koo Nimo and his Adadam Group play the "Palm Wine" type of highlife that seizes the listener and gets him or her to hum the captivating tunes.
Dr K Gyasi and the Noble Kings and Jerry Hanson and Ramblers International, belonged to the big band group. While Dr Gyasi was associated with what came to be known as Sikyi Highlife; Jerry Hanson was noted for what could be described as Classical Highlife. Alhaji Pia played a typical Dagomba Music using a traditional chordophone while Togbe Ahegbebu specialised in traditional Ewe music. Efua Dorkenu was a female trailblazer on the Ghanaian musical scene with her titillating voice.
Voltic Mineral Water; Pepsi Cola; TV 3; Radio Gold; Joy FM and Megastar sponsored the event that was characterised by the rendition of nostalgic hit tunes of yesteryears.
