Farmer commits suicide over impotence

Suhum, May 26, GNA - A 63-year-old farmer who alleged that his wife was flirting with another man, on Monday night hanged himself on his farm at Supreso, a farming village near Suhum in the Eastern Region. Narrating the story to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), on Tuesday, the Assemblyman for the area, Mr Emmanuel K. Mantey, said the deceased, Francis Tawiah, popularly called "Afotey" and his wife Madam Joyce Quaye had eight children and had been married for the past 30 years.

He said for the past five years, the deceased had been complaining that the wife was flirting with another man in one of the nearby villages and had threatened that if she did not stop he would commit suicide.

Mr Mantey said one of the daughters of the couple who was not happy with what her father had been saying, reported the matter to the elders of the town for arbitration.

He said in the cause of the arbitration, the wife alleged that the deceased was impotent and the elders advised her to help the deceased to seek medical cure.

Mr Mantey said the deceased who could no longer tolerate the behaviour of the wife, committed suicide. The Police at Suhum confirmed the story and said the deceased had since been buried after post mortem examination.
