GLA organises awards event

Accra, Dec. 17. - GNA - The Ghana Librarians Association (GLA) has held a dinner dance awards event to honour librarians, both active and retired, in Accra. Mrs. Helena Asamoah, the out-going President of the GLA Kumasi, urged non registered members at the ceremony to register by the end of this years.

She said, "registered members' names will be published in the dailies for the public to know the real librarians of the profession and the association". She advised members to demand the GLA membership certificates from prospective employees to ensure that they are employing qualified persons, adding, " the main aim of the GLA is to enhance the profession of the librarian" she said.

"Annually, members in good standing will also be published ... to ensure that we have qualified persons in positions to offer good library services to users ", she said.

Speaking to Ghana News Agency, at the dinner dance award, Mrs. Helena Asaomah observed that, the establishment of National Commission on Libraries is to put libraries in to better shape to effectively carry out their roles in national development.

" We have setup a task force in the establishment of the National Commission of the library to make proposal to government for the proper running of the national library and to strengthen the decentralization of government", she said.

"Librarians in the country should be enhanced in all sectors of the economy to put well-informed information on the Internet for people to know what is going on in the country," she said.

Members of the association also received chartered certificates of recognition in serving the public.

The association has so far recorded 200 registered members, who are both diploma and degree holders.
