Ghanaian politician and actor, John Dumelo, has criticised the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led administration for failing to take decisive actions against the illegal mining activities locally referred to as galamsey.

According to him, he decided to join the #StopGalamsey protest taking place in the country to ensure that the government heeds the calls to ban galamsey to protect the water bodies for future generations.

The Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress added that the polluted nature of the water bodies under the NPP administration cannot be compared to the NDC’s tenure in office.

“We need clean drinking water. And it's surprising that most of the NPP members are silent on this issue. This is our future we are talking about. I have kids and we want to make sure that during that time they would have clean drinking water. And that's why we're here with this situation. I don't want to compare, but of course, during the NDC time, I don't think the water was this polluted.

“That's why we are saying that Nana Addo, who is the president, should do something about it. He said, of course, he's putting his presidency on the line and so he doesn't, I don't think he wants to leave this kind of uncouth legacy,” Dumelo said as shared by JoyNews on X.

The #StopGalamsey protest is a group of Ghanaians who are aggrieved by the destruction of water bodies by illegal mining activities, calling on the government to take actions to resolve the issue.

The demonstration will last for three days, spanning from October 3 to 6, 2024.

Religious leaders, political figures, and state institutions have all added their voices for the galamsey menace to end.

The Organised Labour has served notice that it will embark on a strike on October 10, 2024, if the government fails to respond to the calls.
