The 2018 BET Awards will be held on June 24 and the nominees have been revealed.
Ghana’s Sarkodie and Stonebwoy who previously won the prestigious award as 2012 and 2015 Best International Act Africa winners respectively couldn’t get any nomination this year but United Kingdom (UK) based Ghanaian rapper Stormzy made it.
Born, Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr. better known by his stage name Stormzy, is a Ghanaian descent but an English grime and hip hop artist.
He is competing with Davido (Nigeria), Casper Nyovest (South Africa), Tiwa Savage (Nigeria), Fally Ipupa (DRC), Distruction Boyz (South Africa), Stefflon Don (UK), J Hus (UK) Niska (France), Dadju (France), Booba (France).
The 24 year-old hip hop act won Best Grime Act at the 2014 and 2015 MOBO Awards and was named as an artist to look out for in the BBC’s influential Sound of 2015 list. His most successful song to date is the BPI platinum-selling “Shut Up”, which was initially released as a freestyle on YouTube. The track was then officially released and got to number eight on the UK Singles Chart after Stormzy launched a campaign to reach Christmas number one.
His debut album, Gang Signs & Prayer, was released on 24 February 2017 and was the first grime album to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart.
Many expected Stonebwoy and Sarkodie who recently won some of the top awards at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
2018 Bet Awards nominations were announced in 20 categories, selected by BET’s Voting Academy comprised of a group of respected entertainment professionals in the fields of television, film, music, social media, digital marketing, sports journalism, public relations, creative arts and fans.
The BET Awards will air live on BET on June 24 from Los Angeles.
