The Executive Secretary of the Creative Arts Agency, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo has emphasised the urgent need for Ghana to cultivate a distinct music sound to enhance its global music identity.

Highlighting Ghana's historical role as pioneers of Highlife music, she acknowledges that the country lacks a singular, recognizable music genre that resonates internationally.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement with music industry leaders, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo stated:

"As it stands, when we mention Ghana music, the immediate question is often 'what is Ghana music?' We are currently supporting a diverse range of music styles, but it's crucial for our producers and musicians to develop a specific sound that originates from Ghana. Whether it's Highlife or Hiplife, the key is to establish a music identity that is universally acknowledged."

"It's currently challenging to pinpoint a distinct Ghanaian sound in global music, and this should not be the case. Our music industry needs to reach a point where audiences worldwide can readily identify Ghana's musical signature," she emphasised.

She clarified that the initiative aims not to limit Ghanaian musicians to specific genres but rather to build a cohesive and identifiable music identity.

In a separate development, Ghana introduced the PlayGhana initiative in December 2023 to rejuvenate the presence of Ghanaian music on local airwaves amidst a declining trend.
