A group of Ghanaian Disc Jockeys (DJs) have voiced their grievances over what they perceive as disrespect from artistes in the country.

They expressed their sentiment during the DJs' Exclusive Roundtable, a strategic discussion on Ghana's music airplay, hosted by the Creative Arts Agency (CAA) in Accra.

The meeting, led by CAA's Executive Secretary Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, aimed to foster a constructive conversation regarding the DJs' involvement in the PlayGhana initiative and the implications of the Broadcasting Bill Amendment on their profession.

Popular DJ, AD DJ, highlighted the common scenario where DJs are disregarded and disrespected by artists they've helped ascend to fame and urged the CAA to engage with artists about the situation.

“There are many musicians that you help to get to the top, but they turn you down with protocols and unnecessary excuses when you even need a favour in return. How do you expect me to use my platform to promote your music to get you there only for you to turn around to disrespect me when you are a big artist?” he questioned.

Another DJ, DJ Slim, addressed the misconception that social media influencers, especially TikTokers, are the primary drivers of hit songs, a belief that has inadvertently led to further disregard for DJs.

The discussion also touched on the PlayGhana initiative, which was introduced by the CAA to revitalize the presence of Ghanaian music on the airwaves.

The initiatives, however, faced initial pushback. Gyankroma Akufo-Addo noted that ongoing dialogues are being conducted to refine the initiative and incorporate valuable input from industry stakeholders.
