Gospel artistes begging for votes to win awards unethical – Ohemaa Mercy

Multiple award winning gospel minstrel, Ohemaa Mercy has reacted to colleague gospel artistes campaigning vigorously on social media, traditional media and other platforms for votes to win awards.

She disclosed that gospel artistes making awards their priority as the sole means of evidence to show that they have worked so hard is unethical for the Christendom and should not be entertained.

Ohemaa Mercy told Bola Ray on Starr Chat on Starr FM, gospel musicians clamouring for awards are actually deviating from God’s call.

She advised her colleague artistes doing same genre not to depend on awards but concentrate on doing what they have been called by God to do.

The gospel artiste, born Mercy Twum-Ampofo, revealed that though she has so many accolades to her credit, she never filled any nomination forms or personally submitted her music to be considered for awards.

“I don’t want a gospel artiste to so much depend on awards [SIC]. It’s actually not taking you to where God wants you to be. Personally I haven’t been peeved over awards I was unable to win. I was surprised when I heard that you have to fill a form to submit your works, first it wasn’t so. For me if the awards come it is cool but to go on social media and ask for votes from people when you know you’ve done so well.

“If gospel artistes campaign for votes on social media platforms, it directs what they are called to do and if you’re not careful, you’ll sing just because of awards. You will be playing into the dictate of what will get you an award. It’s an obvious truth that a lot of gospel artistes are singing because of awards and it’s very worrying.

“If you feel you deserve it and you’ve worked hard for it, leave it to the people out there to vote for you. Some of the gospel artistes are doing it too much.

“I hardly see Sarkodie and others artistes campaigning so hard just to win an award so why can’t the gospel artistes do same.” Ohemaa Mercy and husband said on Starr FM.

Undoubtedly, Ohemaa Mercy is one of Ghana’s respected gospel musicians known for her uplifting and hit gospel songs.
