Gospel musicians: Our hope to encounter God?

File Photo File Photo

Gospel musicians in Ghana and beyond are people who have been noted for drawing us closer to God for the kind of songs they produce day in and day out. But is that the case?

In Ghana, great gospel artistes have come and gone and most of them have in one way or the other impacted lives positively. Names like Daughters of Glorious Jesus, Tagoe Sisters, Stella Seal, Diana Hopeson, Elder Mireku and a host of other great musicians have been a blessing to so many people. But can we then say the new crop of singers like Nacee, Ohemaa Mercy, Esther Opiesie, Joe Mettle, Gifty Osei, Cece Tsum, Obaa Christy, Selina Boateng, Cecelia Marfo etc have also been a blessing to the same people?

As a matter of concern, Flex newspaper decided to ask the ordinary Ghanaians who do listen to songs from these gospel musicians to find out if really they do have an encounter with God any time they listen to those songs. What really is the agenda of our gospel artistes? Is it to impact lives or they are also strictly into business just like most of the secular artistes do? Then again is it wrong to be business minded since a lot of monies go into the production of songs to be heard on the airwaves?

Some of the people Flex newspaper spoke to expressed diverse opinions based on their own understandings. Some of them think the new crop of gospel artistes have very weak messages to lead them to God. A few of them also expressed the fact that some of them are not spiritual with the kind of songs they produce.

Interestingly, some of the interviewees confirmed that they don’t enjoy listening to their songs and of course there were some other people who expressed likeness for some of the songs they listen to. The question is how do you see our gospel artistes in Ghana today and are they impactful as they are in the religious sect?
