Ghanaian Highlife artiste KK Fosu has spoken up about how he was prevented from performing at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) following his involvement in a tragic car accident in May 2024.
In an interview with Accra-based Hitz FM on July 22, 2024, KK Fosu recounted how Andy Dosty informed him about plans to honour Amakye Dede at the TGMAs.
Despite doctors advising against it due to his injuries, KK Fosu insisted he would perform even if it meant using a wheelchair.
“I told him I would sit in a wheelchair to perform, although the doctors were against it. I wanted to prove that Highlife is not dead," he said.
However, on the morning of the show, he received another call from Andy Dosty, stating that he had been exempted from the lineup.
“I got another call from Andy Dosty saying that Amakye Dede had told them to exempt me from the lineup due to concerns of how the fans would react because someone had died in an accident I was involved in,” he said.
Expressing his shock, KK Fosu questioned why he should be held responsible for John Claude's death, as he was not the one who caused the accident.
He highlighted the rumours circulating at the time, stating that the TGMAs was an opportunity to show the public that he was alive.
“That period, stories were circulating that I was dead, other stories were circulating that I had my legs amputated. So because that platform was huge, that was a way for me to convince people that I was alive and well.”
Responding to critics who pointed out that he had intentionally refused to attend the funeral of John Claude despite being eager to perform at the TGMAs, he claimed that he has no affiliation with the late blogger and that John Claude’s passing should not affect his livelihood.
“Music is what puts food on my table. Music performance is part of my craft. Performing at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards has nothing to do with John Claude's death. I didn't even know him from anywhere. Does that thing feed my family? Should his death stop me from eating? No!” he said.
What happened?
KK Fosu and his colleague Bless were involved in a tragic car crash on the Accra-Apam highway on May 25, 2024. Both sustained serious injuries, including broken legs. Unfortunately, John Claude, who was also Bless' videographer, died instantly.
Following John Claude’s burial on July 19, 2024, social media users and industry stakeholders, including Elorm Beenie and Eric Toscar, criticised KK Fosu and Bless for not attending the final funeral rites or the one-week commemoration. They were also reproached for their absence and lack of communication with the bereaved family.
In response, KK Fosu expressed his frustration in a Facebook post on July 22, 2024. He stated, “Elorm Beenie, you and your guys are very funny to play with my name. Go to Apam police station and fight for justice for our brother Claude. The one who hit us with his car is walking freely, my boy. Don’t play with fire; it will burn you.”
