Renowned Ghanaian stage actor and voiceover artiste, Andrew Tandoh-Adote, has shared how his struggles with mathematics influenced his career path.

In a conversation with Abrantepa on GhanaWeb TV’s ‘Talkertainment’, Tandoh-Adote shared how his father, an engineer with a strong passion for mathematics, had hoped he would pursue a career in pharmacy.

“He believed in the sciences, and he was one of those parents who believed that you need to do science, something in science, mathematics,” he said.

However, Tandoh-Adote found mathematics challenging and developed a negative attitude towards the subject due to the way it was taught and perceived during his school years.

He explained that the fear and complexity surrounding mathematics discouraged many students of his generation, leading them to believe they could not master the subject.

He stated that a more supportive and encouraging educational environment could have changed his perception of mathematics.

“I think for at least my generation, there was a bit of negativity surrounding mathematics, and it was made to look like this thing that was so scary, so complicated, and so highbrow that if you are dumb, you won't be able to get it.

“So for a lot of us, we developed a negative attitude towards mathematics because of that, unless you are naturally inclined to numbers and things like that, more creative, visual, and all those things.

“But I think if I had been in an environment where those who taught math were more friendly and more encouraging, I think it would have been better,” he said.

Despite his father's wishes, Tandoh-Adote chose to follow his passion for the performing arts, believing he could make a greater impact as a performer.
