On February 27,2003, most people who gathered at the packed Adjabeng Community Tribunal, sympathized with a complainant, Madam Roberta Abrokwah when she broke into tears when her husband, Mr. Jeremiah McCarthy told the Court that he is not responsible for his wife’s six months old pregnancy.
Mr. McCarthy, who had been arraigned before the tribunal for assaulting his wife on the grounds of infidelity, told the Court that, his wife has been having an affair with another man.
Mr. McCarthy said he got wind of his wife’s infidelity from so many sources but he never believed them until he caught her and the man in a dark corner at an unholy hour.
“ When I questioned her about her involvement with the man, she denied and I gave her some few slaps and nothing more,” he said.
Mr. McCarthy told the court that his wife’s boyfriend is responsible for the pregnancy and not him. He even went on to call her “ASHAWO” in the courtroom.
Madam Abrokwah who was weeping all this while, told the court that the man her husband claimed to be her lover was the brother of her best friend.
She said because of the pregnancy, she needed someone to take care of her shop and her friend introduced her to her brother.
According to Madam Abrokwah, when her husband saw her with her friend’s brother, he became furious and without asking any questions, he began to assault her.
Mr. McCarthy was granted a 3 million cedis bail to appear later.
