I’m not in competition with Afriyie - Wutah Kobby

Highlife musician Wutah Kobby born Daniel Morris has denied rumours that he is envious of his former partner Afriyie saying he is not in competition with him.

According to him, while Afriyie may have earned a spot in the highlife category of this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), he is not embittered by the fact that he was not nominated.

“I don’t believe that I do my songs for Afriyie, I do my songs for Ghanaians and they love what I do so if he is there maybe he earned it but I also deserve a spot because I’m doing it right”.

Kobby made the comments during an interview on Hitz FM’s Showbiz Review when he was asked if he was disturbed by Afriyie's nomination in this year’s awards.

Kobby and Afriyie were members of music group Wutah. The former highlife music group came to national attention through the Nescafe Africa Revelation contest of 2004.

The group released several hit songs including ‘Goosie Gander’ and ‘Adonko’. Their song, ‘Big Dreams’ won Best Reggae Song honour at the 2005 Ghana Music Awards.

According to rumours, there was internal bickering between Wutah Kobby and Afriyie. Both refuted the alleged in fighting, although rumours suggest this may have been the cause of the break-up in 2009.

Kobby said, “I started releasing hit singles from 2004 like, ‘Tsotsoo’, ‘Ambulance’, and the likes and nominations are out and I didn’t find any of those songs in any nominations and it's quite baffling and I’m trying to find answers because I don’t know why those songs could not make it through to any category”.

“My songs are highlife songs and I displayed a lot of vocal dexterity in my song and if you listen carefully you’ll realize these are all categories and its affiliates that I should be appearing in but I don’t seem to get where the problem is and I’m baffled and its quite hurting because I work so hard for all these years trying to put hit songs out there,” he continued.

“I also presented my songs like everybody did, my songs are playing they are everywhere so what went wrong?” he questioned.

Kobby added, “I’ve been silent not to talk about it because I believe that there was always going to be a time for me but this time I’m still trying to find out why it will happen like that, it doesn’t sound well to me”.

This year’s VGMA was launched on Friday February, 27. The main awards is scheduled for April 11 at the Accra International Conference Centre in Accra.
