Hiplife icon Barima Sidney has expressed his willingness to perform on campaign platforms for political parties and even compose campaign songs if asked.
In an interview on 3FM Drive on July 11, 2024, Sidney questioned why musicians are criticised for performing or composing songs for political parties.
He argued that just as musicians perform for friends or corporate organisations and get paid, they should be able to do the same for political parties, as long as they do not wear party colours.
Sidney explained, “If I have a friend who invites me to perform, I will go. If a doctor friend invites me, I will go. Why not the politician? As long as I am performing my music without wearing any party colours or holding a flag, I will go.”
He added, “Even if the NDC invites me to perform, I will go as long as they pay me. The money is big, so it’s allowed.”
Sidney has previously been accused of writing songs like ‘Papa No’ and ‘Our Money’ to criticise the NDC, although he has denied these claims.
He reiterated on 3FM Drive with Giovani Caleb that these songs were not directed at the party and that he had no intention of ridiculing them.
Barima Sidney urged Ghanaians to disregard such assertions, stating, “The idea wasn’t to ridicule any political party. It was me coming from the streets and telling him [John Mahama], and in the same song, he said something to calm us down.”
Barima Sidney, along with other celebrities like Diana Asamoah, Samini, and Praye, was spotted at the official unveiling of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), for the 2024 elections.
The event, held at Kumasi Jubilee Park in the Ashanti Region, featured various dignitaries from politics, the clergy, and entertainment.
Barima Sidney performed the official campaign songs for the NPP, while Samini, Guru, and Praye Tiatia also made appearances to greet the NPP candidates and the president.
