Juaso (Ash), Dec 11, GNA - Drama unfolded at the Juaso circuit court last Thursday, when an accused person standing trial for possessing narcotic drugs told the presiding judge that he uses the drug as a stimulant for work.
Kwaku Sarfo, 38, who pleaded guilty to the charge with explanation brought proceedings to a temporary halt amidst laughter when he prayed for his acquittal and discharge, saying he only used the drug as a stimulant.
He was, however, handed a 10-year jail term in hard labour. Detective Police Inspector Mike Fritz Bekoe of the Agogo police prosecuting, told the court presided over by Mr Jacob Boon, that on August 8, this year, around 0800 hours, two policemen who were on their way to work saw Sarfo and a woman arguing.
He said when the police got close to the scene they realised the two were arguing over an amount of 300,000 cedis and invited them to the station.
Inspector Bekoe said the police became suspicious when the accused started behaving strangely at the charge office.
According to the prosecutor, a search was conducted on Sarfo leading to the discovery of two wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
He said the accused was detained while the exhibit was forwarded to the police laboratory in Accra, which proved to be cannabis weighing five grammes.
He was charged with the offence and subsequently put before court.
