Popular Kumawood actor Big Akwes has revealed that the GH¢5,000 he used to receive as royalties during former President Mahama’s tenure has drastically reduced to GH¢23 under the NPP government.
In an interview with Empress Gifty on "U Cook", the actor, who has openly declared his support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed disappointment in the Akufo-Addo administration, stating that it has done more harm than good to members of the creative arts industry.
“As soon as Akufo-Addo's government came into power, I received GH¢23 as ASOG royalties, whereas, during President Mahama’s era, I used to earn at least GH¢5,000,” he said.
He further explained that their call for the government to provide accommodation for members of the movie industry stems from the meagre earnings they receive as royalties.
According to him, the idea of using their royalties to construct housing for actors was initially suggested by fellow actor Kwaku Manu, who proposed that they pay for the accommodations in installments.
“It was Kwaku Manu who suggested that the government use the ASOG royalties to build houses for actors, and we could pay in installments,” he added.
