The issue of musicians paying presenters and radio disc jockeys to play their songs has been a very controversial one in the music industry.
While it is generally considered unethical, some have said it is a form of promotional strategy that should be incorporated into the musician’s plan.
Well, broadcaster, Kofi Okyere Darko has said in an interview that he does not like payola because it rips the DJ of his freedom to play the songs he likes.
“Soli is not legal. I personally don’t like such monies from people. Once they pay you they own you,” he said.
He added that he has never taken any monies from musicians to play their songs.
“So I never took anything like payola from any musician just to maintain that reverence in your field.”
