International Art Exhibition opens in Kumasi

Kumasi, Aug 12, GNA - A two-day international art exhibition designed to give selected artists across the world the platform to share ideas to deepen their artistic knowledge and skills opened in Kumasi on Wednesday.

It is being organised by the African Community of Art Educators and the Department of Art Education of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), on the theme: "Tapping local resources for sustainable education through art".

Dr. Eric Appau Asante, a lecturer at the Department of General Arts Studies of KNUST, and member of the Planning Committee, said it has become imperative for artists to ensure closer co-operation in this era of Information Technology (IT) and globalization to enable them to adopt best practices for enhanced performance.

He said it was the first time KNUST was hosting an international art exhibition and gave the assurance that the University would sponsor more of such programmes to give local artists in-depth knowledge into the dynamics of art in contemporary times.

Madam Hannimari Jokinen, a German visual artist, said the focus of the exhibition was to educate local artists on how to use local resources and materials such as waste products in their work. She called on artists to be more creative and innovative in their work to attract patronage for their products.

Madam Jokinen expressed the hope that the exhibition would depict social settings and socio-cultural beliefs of the people.
