Ghanaian actor John Dumelo over the weekend lifted Ghana’s flag high in Australia at this year Afro Australia Music & Movie Awards.
He received this year’s ‘Best Outstanding African Male Actor 2011’ for his performance in the Ghanaian and Nigerian movie industries.
This adds up to the numerous laurels he has won since he made an entry into the movie industry.
He won the Best Actor In A Supporting role for his role in ‘The Game’ at the first ever Ghana Movie Awards held last year.
In July 2010, he won Best Actor at the Terracotta Awards held to celebrate excellence in talent and creativity in the Nigerian film and television industry. Earlier that year, he was nominated for African Academy Awards (AMAA) Most Promising Actor of the Year for his role in the controversial movie, ‘Heart Of Men’.
In 2009, he was also voted Ghana’s Best Actor at the ‘Joy FM Night With The Stars’.
This year, he was adjudged Best Actor Supporting Role at the Nollywood & African Film Critics’ Awards (NAFCA) held at North Carolina, in the United States.
The Afro Australia Music & Movie Awards night is to celebrate and honour excellence in the music and movie aspect of Africa’s creative arts industry.
The weekend’s ceremony attracted some prominent African stars including Nollywood screen success Mercy Johnson, Desmond Elliot, Pascal Atuma, Soukous, music superstar Awilo Longomba and Sierra Leonian hip hop star LAJ. Other celebrities were also honored.
Dumelo was the only Ghanaian mentioned at the event.
His history in Ghana’s movie industry is an interesting one which is no secret to many fans.
He read Civil Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology after his high school at Achimota High School.
He started acting when he was only a 7-year-old boy at Christ the King School. His first role was as ‘Saka’ in the movie ‘Baby Thief’, a GAMA Films production.
But he went off the screen and resurfaced years later via TV series ‘About To Wed.’
He has since taken up lead roles in a tall list of hit movies including ‘The, King is Mine’ ‘The Perfect Picture’, ‘Chelsea’, ‘Heart of Men’, ‘The Game’, ‘Scent of A Woman’, ‘Pirates of the Night’, ‘Deadly Passion’, ‘Material Girl’, ‘Prince’s Bride’ and ‘Men In Love’.
