Patrons who attended this year’s ‘Kenkey Fest’ were not disappointed a bit after they were treated to varieties of good local dishes made with the finest corn on Saturday at Mantse Agbonaa, James Town-Accra.
The 4th edition of the annual ‘Kenkey Fest’ which celebrates the rich heritage of one of Ghana’s oldest dishes was massively attended compared to the previous years. Participants had a lot to eat and business was at the apex for vendors who took spots at the event grounds.
Kenkey which is associated among the Ga’s is famously known as Komi. It’s made with maize and packaged with the corn leaves. The indigenous dish is mostly served with fish and grinded pepper.
Jamming to exciting songs patrons queued at different joints to order their foods. Most people did a lot of combinations like kenkey with octopus, fried egg, pork, avocado-pear, chicken, khebab with verities of fishes.
In an interview with Manuel Nii Martey Mensah, organizer of Kenkey Fest, he revealed one of the aims of the event is to correct the misconception that there are only two types of Kenkey which the Ga and Fante Kenkey.
He said, “The whole event is about celebrating Kenkey and the various types of Kenkey. We just want to disorient people that Kenkey is not about Ga and Fante Kenkey but there are other types of Kenkey which are lesser known.”
He also disclosed that he has been overwhelmed at the attendance and hopefully next year they will have to organize it on the street.
“I feel this year is impressive comparing this year’s attendance to last year I think this year is massive and I am scared people will have to be standing to eat. I always wait for reviews but this time I think it’s been good. Next year will bigger than this hopefully next year we will probably move out to the street,” Nii Martey added.
Some patrons who spoke to Ghanaweb TV expressed their excitement and delight about the feast and called for more of such programs. Tourists where not left out as they came in their numbers to taste Kenkey for the first time and were elated about the event.
