Kwabena Kwabena became bigger after endorsing NPP - Okraku-Mantey claims

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku-Mantey, has shared his thoughts on the belief that political affiliations can harm the careers of creatives in Ghana.

According to him, some artistes have thrived despite their political endorsements.

Speaking in an interview with Joy FM on August 10, 2024, Okraku-Mantey cited Kwabena Kwabena as a prime example of such artistes.

According to him, the 'Asor' singer's career became more vibrant after endorsing Nana Akufo-Addo as the Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2020.

"Kwabena Kwabena became a bigger artiste after ‘NPP Wo Soro’ [song]. Yea, Kwabena Kwabena became more popular after endorsing Candidate Akufo-Addo. So if you have your issues, don’t blame them on the political parties. If you manage yourself well and position yourself well as a brand, you will thrive," he stated.

Discussing the impact of political involvement on creatives, Okraku-Mantey shared his own experience, mentioning that companies he worked with before entering politics are still willing to do business with him.

"I spoke with some companies I used to work with. They said when I am done with politics, they are ready to still do business with me," he said.

Kwabena Kwabena first endorsed Akufo-Addo in 2008 with the song 'Number One', which was used as a campaign song for the NPP. He continued his support in the 2012 and 2016 elections.

However, Kwabena Kwabena has since distanced himself from politics, stating in a TV3 interview that he is "completely out of politics" and identifies as a Ghanaian rather than a political figure.

Currently, Kwabena Kwabena is promoting his new song 'Fakye Me' featuring Obaapa Christy, from his upcoming gospel EP titled 'God of Restoration'.
