Ghanaian musician, Kwabena Kwabena has said Ghana Music Award is a “private party” and he does not want to be part of it.
According to him, he started boycotting the award ceremony about three years ago.
He told Hitz Fm on Tuesday morning that the last time he won a Ghana Music Award, he was not on stage to pick his award because he lost confidence in the award ceremony.
“The last time I won an award I wasn’t on stage. I will say in the last three years, yes I boycotted Ghana Music Award…” he said, insinuating the award ceremony doesn’t respect artistes and their works.
Kwabena Kwabena’s comments in the wake of preparation for the 2016 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs).
“Who am I, me coming for the VGMAs will not change anything. I have my own personal reasons because you know I am a very passionate person when it comes to music and I strongly feel that people should be able to respect people’s talent and respect people’s art. You understand what I am saying? The art is not an easy thing. It is not easy. I don’t know how anybody sees it but the way we treat the arts here and sometimes the way we look at artistes in this country and the way we the artiste comport ourselves is quite a challenge for me. For me, hey I want to stay in my corner and concentrate on my fans and give them the best of music to relax my fans enough and make sure I am always in their hearts. That’s my focus,” he added.
According to Kwabena Kwabena, he didn’t find it necessary to file for nomination for the VGMAs this year because of his issues with the event.
