Launch of Miss Ghana 2006

Another Search for a Beautiful Mind?
Sparrow Productions Ltd., current organizers of The Miss Ghana Beauty pageant, last Friday launched this year's event at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra.

For the first time in Ghanaian history, the fortunate lady to bear the title "Miss Ghana" will ride home in a luxurious and sleek MG Rover car.

The event that witnessed very important personalities like Mr. Kwabena Agyapong, press secretary to the President of Ghana, was chaired by Ms Shirley Ayorkor Botchwe, Member of Parliament (MP) for Weija, on behalf of Hajia Alima Mahama, Minister of Women and Children Affairs.

In her address, she noted that the Miss Ghana Pageant is the longest running pageant in which the winner bears the name of country, hence it is inperative to consider the fact that at the dawn of independence, the first Miss Ghana, Monica Amekoafia, was right there making history with the first President, Nkrumah.

She said this year's event, which will once again search for a beautiful mind, would also expose how the women of this nation and indeed the world over have come a long way to assert for themselves.

Adding that the search for a beautiful mind brings to life the saying 'you are what you know.

"This message that we are striving to make our youth accept and understand," she added.

"We want young women to know that it is not okay to be a decorative piece, but you need a sharp mind to match great looks."

The speech congratulated the reigning beauty queen, Lamissi Mbillah, for her dedication towards her guinea worm project and her continuation of the Operation New Hope for the Don Bosco Rehabilitation Institute.

She further urged the organizers to keep the candle of the pageant burning and said 'kudos' for all their efforts.

Finally, she congratulated the sponsors of this year's event, including LG electronics, MG Rover Ghana Ltd., Orca Deco, Rhinos Energy Drink, Maxim Cosmetics and other donors.

This year's finale will be held at the National Theatre in July.
