For the second year running, December 24 at the National Theater will see a different concert from that of Kojo Antwi. London-based promotion company, Ghana Base Management (GBM) has since last January, booked the venue for a show by Daddy Lumba and Friends.
An official at the National Theatre booking office confirmed to Showbiz that the date has been set aside for GBM. A representative of the company, Frank Appiah, was emphatic that December 24, 2008 at the National Theatre is for Daddy Lumba.
Antwi institutionalised December 24 at the National Theatre as the night for big shows and thrilled his fans there for 12 years. It was a much patronised, unrivalled event which fans eagerly looked forward to.
Ofori Amponsah, however, clinched the date last year for his Ghana Rocks with Ofori and Friends concert. Many of Antwi’s fans thought there was a problem with their idol for missing the date and sought to know why. In an interview with Showbiz at the end of last year about the concerns of his fans, Antwi said:
“I have been humbled by the many calls and personal contacts from fans who wanted to know if there was anything wrong with me. The radio stations all over the country were particularly concerned and kept calling to find out why I missed 24th December.”
Antwi explained that he was exhausted as a result of shows he did in the course of the year to mark Ghana’s 50th independence anniversary celebrations and decided to rest.
The fact he has to contend with this year is that he would not get the National Theatre on December 24 even if he happens to be the fittest fellow in the country on the day.
Any musician also hoping to get the Accra International Conference Centre for a show on December 26 should forget about that since Ghana Base Management has booked the place on the day for a Daasebre Dwamena and Friends concert.
