Majority of Ghanaian songs lack spiritual value - Enam

Ghanaian vocalist Enam has expressed that most songs released by artists today seem plain and lack spiritual value.

Enam, who recently unveiled her single 'Libation,' believes that music is a potent tool for connecting with others in various ways.

"Imagine watching a movie without music or sound, or attending church without music. Music is designed to evoke something profound within us, something we refer to as spirituality. When you tap into it, you find ways to influence the world according to your will. This influence manifests in several forms, including the ability to affect one's own life," the singer elaborated.

Enam's genre, Afro-Spiritual, draws inspiration from the 'Hadzivodushis' (priestesses of song) of the 'Yeʋe' Shrine in the Volta Region.

"Music transcends the tangible to affect our consciousness, and this influence can be either positive or negative. Any music lacking depth will not achieve its full impact on the human soul," Enam emphasized.

"I view music as a conduit to spiritual life. Music has become a staple in daily life, yet I sense a lack of spirituality in most songs.

"Some artists focus solely on the rhythmic quality and danceability of the sound, overlooking the spiritual significance," Enam remarked during an interview.

The powerful singer also mentioned that her drive to explore the Afro-spiritual genre is to immerse listeners in the spirituality of Ghanaian indigenous culture, which is a key motivation for her musical career.

"Ghanaian music is incredibly rich, particularly when we revisit the use of sound in our ancestral spiritual practices. Everything holds meaning and purpose," she observed.

With the success of her six-track EP, featuring the award-winning Highlife artist Akwaboah, Enam aims to rekindle interest in the wisdom embedded in traditional music, with 'Libation' serving as a prime example.

Her new song 'Libation' is paired with captivating visuals that foster a sense of unity with the earth and water, embodying the essence of spirituality and our connection to the world we inhabit.
