Man 48 charged with defilement

A forty-eight year old, James Asante has been remanded in prison custody for allegedly defiling a six-year old girl at East Legon in Accra.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector E.T. Boison told a Circuit Court in Accra presided over by Mr. Imoru Ziblim that both the victim and the accused live in the same community at East Legon. On November 5, last year in the afternoon, the victim’s mother sent her to buy some fried fish and on her return the accused called her to where he weaves baskets.

Inspector Boison said the accused told the victim to see him in his room. The unsuspecting girl obliged and the accused took advantage and raped her.

He said the accused then warned her not to mention it to anybody and asked her to come back later. On that same night at about 3 am the complainant saw her daughter loitering behind the gate of their house and when she questioned her, she said she was coming from the room of the accused and told the mother what she had gone through.

The complainant immediately lodged a complaint at the Legon Police Station; the accused was apprehended and later referred to the Women and Juvenile Unit (WAJU) for further investigations.

A police medical report revealed that the child had been defiled. The accused was charged with the offence and remanded in prison custody to reappear on April 15.
