Man disfigures girlfriend with broken bottle

A 27-year-old store assistant has been dragged to a Tribunal for inflicting several wounds in his girlfriend with a broken bottle.

The reason for his action was that he spotted the girlfriend coming out of another man's room and conversing with the man. The store assistant, Felix Appenteng, was all the time suspecting his girlfriend of cooking for the man. Appenteng, appeared before an Accra Circuit Tribunal last week Wednesday charged with unlawfully causing harm.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded into prison custody to appear again last Wednesday, 29 May 2002. Police Chief Inspector Helena Sarpomah, told the tribunal that Appenteng and the victim, Mabel Arthur, 23, trader, have been in a relationship for the past three years.

Two weeks ago, Mabel left her Nungua residence in Accra to spend some days with Felix, resident at Tema. Felix not happy with the visit, requested Mabel not to visit him again. Following this remark, Mabel returned to her home at Nungua.

On Saturday, 19 May, Felix visited Mabel but was not given a warm reception as had always been the case. The following day at about 5.30 am Mabel woke up unknown to her, Felix wad hiding behind the door. As soon as she opened the door, Felix, holding a broken bottle pounced on her and attempted to inflict wounds on her.

Mabel, however, blocked her face with her hands, resulting in receiving severe wounds on both hands. This led to a struggle between Mabel and Felix and in the process, the accused succeeded in inflicting several other wounds on the body of Mabel.

Tenants in the house managed to rescue Mabel after collecting the broken bottle from Felix.

Mabel and Felix were sent to the Nungua Police Station where a report was made. Mabel was later taken to the Police Hospital in Accra and was treated and discharged. Chief Inspector Sarpomah said during police investigations, the accused admitted assaulting the complainant. The tribunal was presided over by Mohammed Nabon.
