Man jailed for stabbing girlfriend

Accra, Sept. 11, GNA - A 21-year-old man was on Thursday sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment with hard labour by the Adjabeng District Magistrate's Court in Accra for stabbing his girlfriend.

The accused Peter Ansah, a trader, pleaded guilty to assaulting Jessica Nyamekye, 18, with a knife and was sentenced on his on plea. He attacked her with a knife and stabbed her with on the head, back, neck and the hand.

The Judge Mrs Mills Tetteh said a person like Ansah needed to be punished, as he could even kill a person.

"She might be your girlfriend but she is not your property," she said.

The Prosecutor Inspector J. N. Kweku said that the accused and the girlfriend lived together at Santa Maria until about two weeks ago when the girl told him that she could not live with him again. Ansah, who did not take kindly to that went in search of her and found her new house.

At about 1500 hours on September 5 he went to the girlfriend's house and learnt that she did not sleep at home the previous night. However, he met her while he was leaving and attacked her with a knife. 11 Sept. 03
