Many Foreign Citizens in Ghana's Parliament?

Some Members of Parliament (MP) holding citizenship of other countries and thus not qualified to sit in Ghana's parliament have been identified by a source.

According to Article 94 (2a) of the constitution, a person legible to be a Member of Parliament must not owe allegiance to any other country other than Ghana. They are:

  • Kennedy Adjepong, MP for Assin North: He holds both Ghanaian and United States citizenship

  • Maxwell Jumah, MP for Asokwa: He holds both Ghanaian and United States citizenship

  • Hon. Joseph Henry Mensah (NPP) MP for Sunyani East and Senior minister holds a British passport

  • A recently appointed minister, who is also an MP is a British citizenship ..still being investigated

At least two other MPs are allegedly holding onto their US citizenship while still in the Ghanaian parliament.

Last week, Lawrence Akwasi Agyeman-Prempeh, who had been nominated by President Kufuor for the position of Deputy Minister of the Ashanti Region had his confirmation rejected by a parliamentary committee vetting nominees for holding US citiznship and thus putting him in breach of the Constitution and therefore not legible to be a Deputy Minister of State.

Expect more by-elections soon
