Marriage is not a bondage; there’s nothing like 'for better or for worse' – Rabbi Odame

Popular counsellor and pastor, Rabbi Odame Ansah, is advocating against the swearing of the famous ‘For better or for worse’ vow during wedding ceremonies.

According to him, marriage should not be treated as a bondage where one cannot freely exit even if they are living in dire and unfavourable situations.

Speaking on Peace FM, he explained that the concept of ‘for better or for worse’ is not biblical, but rather a doctrine initiated by a church.

As such, people must be allowed to leave and exit their marriages when they notice they do not serve a good purpose in their lives.

“I am disgusted by the ‘for better for worse’ vow that we recite during wedding ceremonies. This vow is not in the Bible, it is the doctrine of a church that is meant to keep people together, so even if the person is in a marriage and they are dying, they must still stay there,” he explained.

According to Rabbi Odame, he has canceled the administration of the ‘for better or for worse’ vow.

He said, “I have stopped saying that vow for a very long time. Yes, I have canceled it. When I am administering vows during wedding ceremonies, we don’t say that there.

“Why should it be there, and what purpose does it serve? It has made marriage like a bondage, and a lot of people are suffering because of that.”
