Meet the most popular African in Korea

Sam Okyere, a Korean-based Ghanaian has won the hearts of many Koreans through entertainment and he is reported to be the most popular African in Korea.

He has risen through the ranks and is now ranked among some of the most famous Korean stars like K Pop’s Go Joon Hee and Ryu Seung Bum.

He began in 2009 as a Computer Engineering student in Korea after he won a scholarship sponsored by the Korean government, Mr Okyere discovered his talent and decided to veer into the entertainment sector.

His journey to stardom started when he joined a pop group as a rapper in School.

He was later invited by a friend as a panel member on a show known as ‘Hello Counselor’ where Africans could voice out their concerns as black people living in Korea. That opened doors for him.

With the ability to fluently speak the Korean language, Mr Okyere subsequently shot into the limelight after he featured in one of the most popular and longest running TV shows in that country, ‘Happy Together’.

As a model and an actor with a huge following in Korea, he prides himself as one of the few dark-skinned persons who has successfully contributed to the acceptance of black people in Korea.
