Movies, Lifestyles and more entertainment on DStv this January

It’s a new month and a new year, and the fun and excitement continues of DStv! Viewers can tune in to an exciting lineup or new programs and movies this January. Check out some of the highlights:

MasterChef: The Professionals (Premiere): The show for professional chefs returns for a second season, as once again contestants are put through their paces to find out who will be crowned champion of MasterChef: The Professionals. This exciting, nerve-wracking series follows the hunt for a young chef who can make it to the top of the culinary world. Legendary double Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Junior and MasterChef judge Gregg Wallace are joined by Michel’s trusted sous chef Monica Galetti, and together they search for the chef who has the skills, commitment, palette and style to make it one day to a Michelin standard. DStv audiences can tune into BBC Lifestyle from Monday 2 January at 20:00 CAT to watch as the hopeful chefs are filtered down to just one winner over six gruelling weeks. They must use their ingenuity, their experience and their professionalism to get through various challenges in order to show they are worthy of the title of Champion.

Come Dine With Me (Season 4 Premiere): Come Dine With Me sees amateur chefs attempt to wow each other with their culinary and dinner party hosting skills in order to win a cash prize. Over the course of a week, each chef takes it in turn to host a dinner party and the guests score the host on their way home. The host with the most points scoops the £1,000 prize. DStv audiences can tune into BBC Lifestyle from Tuesday 3 January at 19:00 CAT to watch as of course personalities clash at almost every dinner party. It’s often not just the champagne corks that go with a bang as insults are traded, homes are snooped around, and the flowing wine loosens the diner’s tongues…

Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child (Premiere): September 18th 2010 is the 40th anniversary of the death of Jimi Hendrix. This film uses the guitarist’s own words to tell the story of Jimi’s remarkable life, tracing his roots from his hardscrabble Seattle upbringing to his stint as a US Army Paratrooper as a member of the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. DStv audiences can tune into BBC Knowledge from Sunday 1 January at 21:00 CAT to watch Jimi’s own account of his journey as a non-descript sideman to R&B stars such as Little Richard on the famed ‘Chitlin’ Circuit to his decision to move from Nashville to New York in search of a dream. Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child is filled with never before seen photographs and film footage from the Hendrix family archive. The project features a soundtrack that includes such legendary Hendrix songs as ‘Purple Haze’, ‘Hey Joe’, ‘Fire’, ‘Voodoo Child’, together with never before heard live performances, studio recordings and demos – including some of the final songs Hendrix was writing and recording just before his untimely death in September 1970.

Charlie St. Cloud: Charlie St. Cloud is a young man overcome by grief at the death of his younger brother. So much so that he takes a job as caretaker of the cemetery in which his brother is buried. Charlie has a special lasting bond with his brother though, as he can see him. He meets up with his brother (Sam) each night to play catch and talk. Then, a girl comes into Charlie’s life and he must choose between keeping a promise he made to Sam, or going after the girl he loves. DStv audiences can tune into M-Net East on Monday 2 January at 23:00 CAT to watch. Starring Zac Efron, Kim Basinger and Charlie Tahan.

Burlesque: A small-town girl ventures to Los Angeles and finds her place in a neo-burlesque club run by a former dancer. The Burlesque Lounge has its best days behind it. Tess, a retired dancer and owner of the venue, struggles to keep the aging theatre alive, facing all kinds of financial and artistic challenges. With the Lounge’s troupe members becoming increasingly distracted by personal problems and a threat coming from a wealthy businessman’s quest to buy the spot from Tess, the good fortune seems to have abandoned the club altogether. Meanwhile, the life of Ali, a small-town girl from Iowa, is about to change dramatically. Hired by Tess as a waitress at the Lounge, Ali escapes a hollow past and quickly falls in love with the art of burlesque. Backed by newfound friends amongst the theater’s crew, she manages to fulfill her dreams of being on stage herself. DStv audiences can tune into M-Net East on Tuesday 3 January at 22:30 CAT to watch things take a dramatic turn though when Ali’s big voice makes her become the main attraction of the revue. With Cher, Christina Aguilera, Alan Cumming and Eric Dane.
