Musician charged with rape

Kumasi, July 7, GNA - A Circuit Court in Kumasi, on Tuesday ordered the Police, to prefer rape charge against a complainant, Ebenezer Frimpong, who brought a charge of threat of death against one Daniel Coffie, alias "Odoba", a popular highlife musician. The order of the Court followed the testimony of Helena Dufie, wife of Coffie, alleging that Frimpong raped her in June this year. Dufie said she did not disclose the incident to her husband for fear of being divorced.

The Court ordered the Police to conduct fresh investigations into circumstances leading to the alleged rape.

Coffie pleaded not guilty to the charge of threat of death and was granted 15 million cedis bail to re-appear on July 20. Chief Inspector of Police, John Afful, told the Court that on June 17, this year, Coffie who was armed with a locally manufactured gun and a sharp cutlass, stormed the house of the complainant. He said, when Coffie did not meet the complainant at home he threatened to cause commotion unless the tenants in the house produced Frimpong.

Chief Inspector Afful said the following day when Frimpong returned from a trip from Ejura, he was informed of the threat and lodged a complaint to the Police and Coffie was arrested.
