Artiste manager and CEO of Rufftown Records, Ricky Nana Agyemang, also known as Bullet, has rubbished rumours that his feud with his signee Wendy Shay is a publicity stunt.
In an interview on UTV’s United Showbiz on 8 June 2024, Bullet clarified that the issues were genuine and not fabricated for attention.
According to him, publicity stunts do not work. Thus, he would rather spend money to promote his projects than on publicity stunts.
“It was not a publicity stunt; what would have been the use of it to the label if it was a stunt?
“You don’t use stunts to promote projects; you use money to promote them,” he said.
He pointed out that publicity stunts used to be an industry secret in Hollywood.
However, such tactics, when introduced to Ghana, have been abused and overused to the point where genuine issues facing artistes are now mistaken for stunts.
“Stunts used to be an industry secret," he told MzGee, host of the show. "They were something used in Hollywood to get the public talking, and no one even knew. But now that the secret is out there, Ghanaians, especially, have abused it. Now they just do stunts anyhow, and they know that entertainment pundits will help hype them up."
Bullet pointed to the incident involving Akuapem Polo, who admitted to staging a car vandalism act as a stunt, as an example of the trend's excesses.
“It has gotten to a point where even if the artiste is not involved in a publicity stunt, people think it is.
“I thought the Medikal and Fella Makafui issue was a stunt at first. Even up till now, people think it’s still a stunt.
“People reached out to me thinking my issue with Wendy was a stunt. But that wasn't the case,” he said.
He expressed his preference for investing in direct promotion rather than resorting to stunts, which he believes have lost their impact.
“I have never done a publicity stunt, nor have I been involved in one. I would rather spend money on promoting the song than engaging in a publicity stunt. They do not work,” he said.
Bullet also addressed the speculations that had arisen around his relationship with Wendy Shay, confirming that their disagreement was real and not a stunt as many had suspected.
He shared that the issue is now nearly resolved, thanks to discussions with Wendy, her family, and her godfather, Kwesi Ernest.
“We have discussed the issue; I have talked with Wendy herself, her mother, and Kwesi Ernest, who is her godfather. People thought our issue was fake, but it was real; right now, it is about 90% resolved,” he said.
What happened?
In May 2024, Wendy Shay fueled rumours of a split from Rufftown Records after announcing that her new music video 'Who Cares' would premiere on her personal channel and removing all Rufftown content from her social media.
Despite confirming her contract with Rufftown is nearing its end and discussing an offer from an American label, she has not confirmed leaving the label.
However, Bullet, in an interview with GhanaWeb's Elsie Lamar, clarified that Wendy Shay remains with Rufftown Records, despite rumors of her departure.
He reiterated their ongoing professional relationship and stated that any issues are almost settled.
