Joseph Matthew, a multiple award-winning Afro-gospel musician, has emphasized that doing gospel music is not about how you dress or look.
Joseph Matthew has faced substantial criticism regarding his appearance. He wears dreadlocks and dresses in a style reminiscent of hip-hop artists.
In an interview with Metro TV, Joseph Matthew clarified that being a gospel musician has nothing to do with appearance.
According to the ‘Blessed’ crooner, "It is all about education... People think because it is gospel, you have to sing a certain way, dress a certain way, and look a certain way."
He stressed that "people need to understand that wearing dreadlocks and dressing in this way would not send you to hell... You should be able to dress well, look good, and enjoy yourself while serving God... It doesn’t change the message in the song, neither does it change the quality of the song."
Known for songs such as ‘Nyame Ye, Not Alone, Blessed, The Name, and Promise Land, Joseph Matthew won the ‘Best Gospel Song of the Year UK” at the 2023 Ghana Music Awards UK.
